~ Witnesses: He was riding ‘recklessly’ ~
The rider has been identified as Giovanni “Sex” Matis (24), a Cole Bay resident who was well known for riding motorcycles around the island and for the music in his vehicle. He reportedly was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Witnesses told police that Matis had been riding his motorcycle MF-945 “quite recklessly” through the neighbourhood earlier during the day and “due to his irresponsible way of riding, lost control and hit into the right rear corner of a pickup truck with licence plate V-1180,” police spokesperson Inspector Ricardo Henson said in a press release. The pickup was parked on the side of the street.
Matis was thrown from the motorcycle by the impact and fell to the ground where he remained lifeless.
When The Daily Herald arrived on the scene the body was still on the road covered with a white cloth. Ambulance and police personnel were also on the scene. A large number of persons had gathered behind the police crime-scene tape to get a glimpse of what had happened. Matis’ girlfriend was visibly emotional on the scene and had been shedding tears.
Henson said in the release that police patrols and paramedics had been directed to the corner of Jaguar and Cougar Roads around 12:35pm to investigate a traffic accident involving a motorcycle rider who was not showing any signs of life. When the police arrived the victim was lying in the middle of the street. The paramedics who arrived on the scene examined the victim. Dr. Ruth Douglass, who arrived on the scene shortly, stated that Matis had died as a result of the injuries he suffered.
The Police Traffic Department is finalising this investigation.
